"Please plan to join me and other elected officials, community leaders from business, education and civic agencies and other concerned citizens on Tuesday, Feb 6, 2007 at 6:00 pm at the Reading Area Community College, Schmidt Training and Technology Center for a lecture and forum on prevention of gun violence in the City.
We have invited Mr. Paul Helmke, the President of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, to come to Reading and lecture on preventing gun violence and suggest ways we all can help.
Other Mayors from our peer cities will be attending. The format of the program will be a welcome and an introduction of our visiting guests, an introduction of Mr. Helmke and then an approximate 45 minute talk by Paul Helmke. After Mr. Helmke's talk, Reading Police Chief William Heim will speak to particular areas of the gun violence issue that impact the
Reading Police Department and will give a brief update on his Crime Plan.
The public is invited to attend but this is a lecture rather than a public meeting. There will be a short question and answer period after the lecture.
The parking facility at 2nd and Washington will be open and free for this event.
Previously serving several terms as mayor of Ft Wayne, Indiana, Mr. Helmke can speak from a firm appreciation of what we as citizens can do to fight gun violence.
Come to hear his message for our community, and find ways you can become involved in helping address this serious problem. We in Greater Reading have the resources to make a difference, but we need to come together to make it happen.
I hope to see you there."
